Topic/题目:Does It Pay to be Central? Trade Network Centrality and Corporate Innovation
Speaker/报告人:侯芳芳助理教授
Abstract/摘要:Using a sample drawn from 48 countries, we demonstrate that firms’ innovation outcomes are negatively associated with the centrality of the position of the countries in which they are located in the global trade network. Further tests show that being central in a trade network can lead to deindustrialization and the crowding out of manufacturing innovation and can introduce fierce foreign competition that discourages managers from engaging in R&D activities, thereby reducing corporate innovation. Additionally, we show that the impact of trade network centrality on corporate innovation is magnified for firms in innovation-intensive sectors and countries with relatively weak legal protections. The reduction in corporate innovation associated with trade network centrality also diminishes firms’ future performance. We interpret these findings as unintended economic consequences of being central in the global trade network.
