Topic/题目:Doing good while being fair: The relation between Corporate Social Responsibility and Unfair Labor Practices
Speaker/报告人:刘俊岐助理教授
Abstract/摘要:In this paper, we investigate whether firms’ CSR commitment reduces their incentives to engage in unlawful unfair labor practices. We find that firms with strong CSR performance have fewer cases of unfair labor practices. Our inference holds when using alternative model specifications, including the impact of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s expansion as a negative shock to firms’ CSR performance. This effect is more pronounced in highly competitive industries and among firms with a better information environment, and subsidiaries in liberal-leaning states. We also find that the effect of CSR performance is muted in unionized firms, driven by CSR activities targeting stakeholders other than employees. These results further support the tendency for firms with a strong CSR commitment to treat their employees fairly, despite their union-related activities.
