Delonix flame trees bloomed again to greet the new students. After two-weeks’ meticulous preparation, we successfully completed the freshmen orientation.
Enrollment
At 8 am on September 10, 2018, Secretary Miss Kimberley Chou and other volunteers arrived Sanjiacun and prepared all the materials needed for enrollment. Following the instructions and procedures, volunteers first checked new students’ personal information and then collected their documents. After confirming their materials meeting the requirements, volunteers helped them with enrollment and distributed school badges and campus cards. Miss Kimberley and volunteers patiently answered the questions about enrollment, and study and life in IFAS from students and parents, who expressed their appreciation sincerely afterwards. Enrollment lasted one day and a half. By noon on September 11, all the incoming Chinese students as well as more than half of incoming International students had finished the procedures of enrollment. Filled with excitement and hope, the new members of IFAS had set out on their journey of studying in Xiamen University.

Orientation Activity: IFAS Incoming Students Exchange Symposium
In the evening of September 15, 2018, IFAS Incoming Students Exchange Symposium was held by IFAS Graduate Students Union at room 501, Chengfeng Building. Chinese graduate students from both grade 1 and grade 2 attended the symposium, which was hosted by Sun Tianxiang. He firstly extended his welcome to all the arrivals, and played short videos to present life and study in IFAS to new students. Then, the representative of second-year master students, Yang Detian, shared his experience in studying, research, and career planning with new students. The requirements of joining IFAS Student Union were also presented by the host.
All the first-year students took part in the icebreaker game-You Know Who I Am. 4 out 18 students won small gifts with describing the characteristics and personal information of some specific second-year students accurately.

Forming new student associations
In the afternoon of September 20, Chinese incoming students formed their new student associations-class committee and class youth league. The meeting was hosted by Sun Tianxiang. Mr. Jie Shangfeng, Instructor of School of Management and IFAS, attended the meeting. Before the election, Mr. Jie delivered his speech about the higher requirements of working ability regarding master students compared with undergraduate students, expressed his wish that new associations could play a leading role in establishing our brand and specialty. Then, the students standing for election took turns to give their campaign speeches, and all the arrivals voted for new student association members afterwards. By secret ballot, the votes were counted on site by tellers, and 2018 class committee and class youth league officially formed. We believe that all the association working members will efficiently cooperate with each other, comply with the requests of institute’s management and operation, and serve for the needs of fellow students, therefore accelerate IFAS’ future development.

Opening Ceremony of the Institute
The opening ceremony of IFAS was held in the morning of September 21 at room 501, Chengfeng Building. Dean of IFAS Prof. Ye Jianming, Director of Student Work Office Ms. Jiang Jiao, Instructor Mr. Jie Shangfeng, along with all the other faculties attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wang Lihong.
Prof. Ye welcomed all the incoming students warmly, and stressed in his speech that for master students, studying and research cannot be emphasized enough. He also suggested that students should get involved in social activities and animatedly make arrangements for life and study instead of learning within the confines of theoretical topics. Ms. Jiang briefly introduced the structure of new students and the current situation of institute’s student employment status, and gave her best wishes to new students. Prof. Wang gave a comprehensive introduction of IFAS, and encouraged students to seize the opportunity and explore actively while studying here.

Then the representatives of second-year master students Kong Mengxue and Daniel Kaiser shared their life and study during the last year, and wished all the new students have a fulfilling and rewarding life. And one of the incoming students Yan Zehao also gave a speech about his plan for advanced study and self-improving hereafter.

So far, all the orientation work has been successfully carried out. We hope that all the students of IFAS could adhere to the motto of XMU-“Pursue Excellence; Strive for Perfection”, and endeavor to make great achievements in the future.
