Abstract/摘要:Political instability triggers financial and economic crises despite this existing fact; however, prior studies have emphasized the economic impact of political risk, specifically in Africa. In this study, in contrast, we examined its impact on banks' systematic risk by considering the recent regulatory improvement that is important to private sector development in the region. We used -level bank data from 41 African countries for a time period from 2010 to 2021. The finding shows that political instability enhance bank's systematic risk significantly. Moreover, the result shows that strong regulatory quality reduces but does not completely alleviate this adverse effect, although it has a minimal individual role in banks risk-taking. Countries with a better regulatory framework also experience a lesser systematic risk when compared with their counterparts. We conducted several robustness checks, and the results are consistent.
